The Differences Between A GED and High School Diploma
A high school diploma and a GED are both symbols that a person has obtained specific skills, in this case, passing high school successfully. Students who did not finish high school or those who are home schooled and ready to finish their high school education generally earn a GED. The GED test consists of an exam in five different academic subjects, and is not open to current high school students or those under the age of 16.
Countless employers will view a GED or HSED as enough to be able to apply for a job. There is a question as to whether employers will recognize a GED as equal to a high school diploma. While the GED or HSED takes a blended approach to meeting state a high school requirements it does carry a different level of perceived accomplishment. One more difference between a high school diploma and a GED is how long it takes to earn one. Students can legally take a GED exam at the age of 16. After a student passes, this student can regard them self as a high school graduate. The traditional high school model usually takes a standard of four years to finish all of the requirements. It is not unusual for motivated students to take extra classes at night or during the summer in order to meet all of their high school diploma requirements for in three years.
While five percent of colleges or universities will not accept students who have a GED, the other 95 percent of colleges accept a GED as meeting their entrance requirements. Several of these colleges will insist that students who hold a GED take another test before being fully accepted to the college or university. Applicants holding a high school diploma do not have to take the additional entrance exam.
On the whole, high school diplomas are looked upon more positively. Some employers, colleges, universities tend to see a high school diploma as showing dedication and responsibility. Also, experience in working with groups and with other people is preferred by colleges, employers and universities. For these reasons, even if the GED meets legal requirements, graduates with high school diplomas are generally regarded in a better light.
