Testing Helps

Practice tests are not only advised for those who are uncertain as to their abilities but among those who have confidence in taking the actual examination. And despite the subjectivity of the essay section, writing practice will also help improve such areas as sentence and paragraph construction. Test takers should also be aware of staying on the topic in their essays, for straying from it could result in a score of zero, as would essay sections that are left blank or are not legible.

Originally known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the SAT was developed by the College Board for the purpose of revealing how students analyze and solve particular issues. It is divided into three parts that test skills in critical reading, mathematics and writing. This helps organize the test and allows you to focus your attentions on each individual section.

Among the published material available is a Math Level 1C test booklet containing six full-length practice examinations plus a diagnostic test by which those taking it can check and have fully explained each one of their answers. The areas covered include algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, all of which will appear in the SAT math section.

There are also courses that teach the most efficient way of using calculators in a test. This is significant, as the use of calculators has become a part of SAT exams, and in fact has found to raise the scores of those taking the tests. The writing section of the SAT exam has both multiple-choice questions and a brief essay, although the first part counts as approximately 70% of the total score of the section.

The multiple-choice section involves such areas as identifying grammatical errors or improving the overall structure of a passage. Honing these skills can come through practice testing. For this reason, practice tests are available from many sources and their use is encouraged. The College Board website offers not only sample questions but a complete practice test and even a preliminary SAT (PSAT) exam.
